For their first game of the season, the Cubs did well. Facing the PCO White Sox, the Cubs started off at bat. Not much happened - no hits, but Ryan N did get on base on a pitch that grazed his jersey. He successfully stole two bases but was left there. Colton took the mound and struck out three of five runners, but errors cost the Cubs a couple of runs.
Second inning came and the team settled down with a lead-off single by Mack. He stole two bases on two pitches. The Sox walked Cal. A wild pitch and smart base running by Mack put the Cubs first score on the board. Cal stole his way to third and then home on a wild pitch, tying the game. Colton took first on a base-on-balls. He stole second, then third, and eventually home on another wild pitch. This put the Cubs up by one run. The Sox then downed the next three batters on strikeouts.
The Sox first batter made it to first on balls, he then stole second. The second batter hit a line shot at third. Don quickly caught the ball and seeing the Sox runner exposed on the caught fly, Don threw the ball to Ryan N. The two players made an exciting double play. The Sox went on and had three hits in the bottom half of the second inning. And scored three runs before the Cubs shut them down.
Third inning started off with a single by Don. He was able to steal second. Then Ryan N hit his third pitch but the third baseman snagged it and threw him out. Don was able to steal third and then on a past ball, stole home. The top half of the inning ended on a strikeout. The Cubs were down 5-4.
Calvin took the mound in the third inning. The Sox first batter hit one and earned a double, then scored a couple of pitches later. The second batter popped it up and Ryan N caught it for out #1. The next ran to first on a dropped third strike, but Garrett gunned him down for out #2. The inning ended when the next batter popped another one up, this time to Mack. Mack hauled it in for the out. The Cubs were down 6-4.
In the top of the fourth inning Cal lead off. He made it to first on balls. On a past ball, he bolted for second but the catcher recovered and made a perfect throw right into Cal's slide for an out. Three pitches later, Colton was walked. On the very next pitch he stole second safely. Then with the count at 2 and 2, Brandon drove the ball up first base line for a triple, scoring and RBI with Colton. The next batter struck out, then Hayden made it to first on balls. Don got up to bat and hit one out to the first baseman, who turned and tossed it to the pitcher getting the third out and ending the game.
